Film Courage: How has teaching made you a better writer?
Matthew Kalil, Screenwriter/Author/Instructor: Being conscious of what I’m doing, that has been really interesting because before I was a teacher and I’d learned some of the writing techniques and was doing writing, when I had to express that to a student or a learner or something and I had to say this is what I do or this is how it’s done suddenly I had to consciously stop and think about…Wait a minute? What do I do? How do I do this thing that I do? That has made me sort of a conscious writer. And that has led me to some really interesting places which I do talk about in the book. But it’s also just generally being more conscious about what I’m doing on all levels because when you have to express that to a student, you have to kind of think through what you’re doing and that has been really great.
I think it’s also sometimes I get people giving guest lectures and they’re really great writers but they can’t explain what they’re doing. They just go I don’t know? I just do it. And also when I’ve…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
